DAY 8 - HOLLAND, MI TO LAKE MICHIGAN BEACH, MI

Mileage: 51.5 - Total Mileage: 413.5
Margarita Count - 14

We were back on the bikes today continuing to move south along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. We were in a hotel last night and so it was quicker to get rolling today. We took advantage of the "continental breakfast" at the hotel - just a bag with a muffin, granola bar and banana - to get us down the road to Saugatuck where we planned to have second breakfast.

The view of the bay and harbor in Saugatuck made a great background for a picture of my bike. 😉

We didn't see any cafes that looked appealing for second breakfast so we went another 4 miles down the road to the Blue Star Cafe in Douglas. Breakfast was good and we all ate like we hadn't seen food for 2 days. That's what bike touring will do to you!

This area is definitely a tourist area, with lots of vacation rentals and activities centered around sailing and the beach on Lake Michigan. It is a beautiful area and one I'd like to return to again.

I have seen many buildings throughout the small towns with murals on the sides or back. I've tried to get pictures but sometimes I forget. This is the mural I saw today in South Haven.

We stopped in at the local bike store in South Haven to see if there was anything we couldn't live without. It is a little easier to forgo gadgets since we know we'd have to carry them the rest of the trip. They had a cool giant bike outside the bike shop. I got a picture of Rhonda and Jon in front of it, too.

We had lunch/dinner at a place called DiMaggios that was right at the edge of town. We had a small lunch and some adult beverages, then ordered sandwiches to go for dinner in camp tonight. We are at a quiet little "resort" with cabins and room for tent camping. We appear to be the only campers tonight and it should be pretty quiet. Not that a little noise would bother us - we're tired enough at the end of the day to sleep through most anything!

This is our last night in Michigan. Tomorrow we will finish our day in Indiana and we'll turn east towards Ohio and Lake Erie. We are making progress!
