DAY 10 - LA PORTE, IN TO ALMOST MONTEREY, IN

Mileage: 50.5 - Total Mileage: 524.1
Margarita Count - 19

We got on the road a little early this morning since we were in the hotel last night. We took advantage of the hotel breakfast before leaving La Porte. Today was a shorter day, but we only had a few options for stops and food before camp. As we left La Porte, there was an exercise class in the park next to the lake. If you have to exercise, a great location helps!

We mostly stayed together today - I think they were riding slower than usual! And it was basically flat, straight roads, which no doubt helped me keep up. We saw lots of fields of soybeans and corn, then more fields with corn and soybeans!

We made our first stop in Hanna, IN for second breakfast, about 19 miles down the road. Rhonda and I had cinnamon raisin french toast that hit the spot! I love needing to eat all this food every day to keep me pedaling!

The next stop for the day was in North Judson, IN. Rhonda and Jon met Mr. Fingerhut on their way into town. Mr. Fingerhut's family has owned and operated the Fingerhut Bakery and Cafe there for 8 generations now. Mr. Fingerhut was also instrumental in getting a 10-mile paved bike path completed from North Judson almost to Monterey. We rode the length of the path on our way to camp. After chatting with him, we stopped at the bakery and got cookies to go. Then we made a stop at our new favorite store, Dollar General. They are a great one-stop shop for a variety of touring needs. Plenty of drinks and snacks, as well as needed household items like soap or sunscreen.

We knew we had no more food options prior to the campground tonight. Mr. Fingerhut recommended a good Polish deli that was on our way to camp. We stopped in there and got deli sandwiches to go and had a quick snack in the deli before heading out. The deli sat just north of the county line. As soon as we crossed the county line headed to camp we lost that hour we gained yesterday. We were back on Eastern Time again! Easy come, easy go.

We are at the Rising Sun Campground. It is mostly a seasonal campground where people leave their trailers for the summer and visit regularly. We basically have the tent area to ourselves. When we tried to pay, the manager said not to bother since we are only here for one night. I think she just felt sorry for us not having a car!

It's almost time to head to bed - the cicadas are singing and I am so tired I should sleep well.
