Today had lots if variety! Since we were camped under the community park pavilion last night, we at least woke up with dry tents. Last night was interesting. To stay at the park, you check in with City Hall and the police so they know you are there. It is free to stay, and they have restrooms with showers available. Nobody came by last night to check on us, but the maintenance guy stopped by about 6:20am to check the restrooms. That was my first wake up this morning. My second wake up was the city work crew that arrived a little after 7am with the bulldozer! They sure didn't want us hanging around!
The rain stopped sometime during the night and the forecast for today looked promising. It appeared that all the rain had moved through, even though it was still overcast this morning. We had breakfast at the little restaurant next to the community park and were on the road by about 8am. That's pretty early for us! We had finished the portion of the Erie Canalway Trail on our route yesterday. The last two days were basically flat along the canal, and I knew we would start climbing today.
Our route was just up and down all day. We stopped for a short break is Williamson about 15 miles into the day. We met Merrell Parker at the Walgreens there. He's actually from Fair Haven where we are staying tonight. We chatted for a bit and then got back on the road. We finally saw our first piece of blue sky as we rode into Pultneyville, and also got our first view of Lake Ontario. It was windy today - mostly a headwind this morning - and there were white caps on the lake. My favorite kid of riding - uphill into a headwind!
The landscape turned to small farms and orchards today nestled among the rolling hills. I mostly saw apple orchards today and fields of corn were dominant. The scenery was pretty and peaceful.
The blue skies didn't last long enough. By the time I was about 34 miles in, a storm was brewing off Lake Ontario. The wind was blowing hard from the side - hard enough for me to have to lean my bike to the side to keep from going off the road. I saw a marina off to the left and ducked in for a few minutes to let the storm pass through. Once the rain let off it was a quick 6 miles into our lunch stop.
After lunch we only had about 12 miles to camp outside Fair Haven. We stopped and bought some sandwiches to take to camp for dinner, and I found a liquor store with a 4-pack of margaritas to wash it all down. Our neighbors in camp left for dinner and left a beagle in their trailer. We've listened to the beagle cry and howl for over an hour now. I feel for the dog! Well, at least the dog's owners are having a peaceful dinner in camp, unlike us!
Our campsite was on a bluff overlooking Lake Ontario. I didn't get a sunset picture but this was close enough. I'm tired and the next two days will be tough days of climbing. Better get some sleep while I can.
