We knew we had a long day today, so our plan was to get breakfast at the hotel when they opened and then hit the road early. We ate a good breakfast since we knew there were no services for the first 42 miles today. I got an extra bottle of gatorade to put in my pannier, and more snacks and protein bars for good measure.
It was a cool 61 degrees when we started and that certainly helped us put some early miles under our wheels. We had some pretty views of the ground fog and the sun coming up as we left Wabash along the river.
We had one good climb early this morning in the Salamonie River Forest and to the top of the Salamonie Dam. The forest was really pretty but I didn't get any pictures since I was just concerned with breathing and getting to the top of the climb! There's always a dam climb to get to the dam! We had a good view of the reservoir from the dam and enjoyed nice rolling hills descending from the dam.
The rest of the early morning was spent in the gently rolling hills of farmland. Some of the rolling hills only seemed to go up and not down - that's just the way some days are!
The plan was to stop at Zanesville 42 miles down the road for second breakfast. They were supposed to have a restaurant and convenience store. Well, the plan was solid but the intel was a little faulty. The restaurant was temporarily closed and the only services were at our favorite store, Dollar General. We got snacks and refilled our supplies. Jon had located an open "pub" another 12 miles down the road in Poe that would have to do for lunch.
"Pub" was a bit of overly optimistic advertising. The Hi-Ho Again was a hole in the wall bar that had food. Good enough! We were 54 miles into our day and hungry - just about anything would do! We looked at the map and saw we only had another 14 miles to Monroeville. And it was only 1:30pm. We had a nice tailwind that made the miles fly by.
We are staying at a cyclists hostel tonight. They have a building at the community park with bathrooms, a shower and laundry facilities for cyclists. We even have cots to sleep on inside tonight. And it is all provided free to cyclists by the town.
Monroeville is only about 4 miles from the Ohio border. We have made quick work of Indiana and will spend part of next week in Ohio. Maybe we'll get a welcome sign for Ohio since we didn't get one for Indiana.
For the record, I didn't forget to update the margarita count. There just hasn't been any good opportunities the last two days. I'll work on that tomorrow since we have a shorter day and that will give me time to find an opportunity!
Here's a couple of miscellaneous scenery pics from today. The weather is beautiful now but this sign is a reminder that it isn't always this pleasant!
Cool old building with vines growing on it. Not sure what it was but it is abandoned now.
