Our plan today was to have an early breakfast at the hotel and get on the road by 7:30am at the latest. That plan was scrapped after the thunder and lightning started about 4am. By 6am it was still raining and so we pushed our departure out until the rain had passed. We were finally on our way a little before 8:30am.
The roads were wet and we put on all our rain covers in anticipation of more showers during the day. As Jon said this morning, anyone can do this when it's sunny! We all even had our rain jackets in our jersey pockets ready to go. Of course, since we prepared so well there wasn't a drop of rain today! I thought for sure we would get rain from this, but it just passed by and left us dry and hot.
The morning ride was cool and very overcast. We made a quick stop for snacks and a break about 22 miles into the day. The plan was to stop about noon in the town of Clyde, OH for lunch. At that point we would have 44 of the estimated 70 miles done. We rode on very low-traffic country roads all morning and then had a nice 10-mile bike path that took us from Fremont to Clyde.
Jon found a good sandwich shop called Blue Collar Bistro in Clyde for lunch. It was just off the route which was even better. The sandwiches were very good but the sandwich shop was really hot. We chose to take out our camp chairs and sit in the shade on the side of the shop to eat. I'm sure people passing by thought we were weird!
After a great lunch in Clyde we had "just" 26 more miles to our Warmshowers house for tonight. With the help of a great tailwind (the kind at your back and not in your face!) we made pretty quick work of those last miles.
Our hosts tonight are Lance and Pam. They have a house on the Huron River. There was another cyclist (Anna) that stayed last night and was staying one more night. Anna made us a great chicken stir fry with rice for dinner. It was good food and good conversation. Lance has done several bike tours and is dreaming of a perimeter tour someday.
Tomorrow we head to another Warmshowers house in Cleveland. There isn't much camping available through this area and so the Warmshowers has been a great option for us.
Random scenery from today: Bowling Green State University stadium and old barns.
