Today was a long-ish day. We got out of camp at a decent hour this morning after eating a hearty breakfast of oatmeal, protein shake and Coke. We knew we had about 27 miles to Rochester, IN before we had any good options to eat.
We enjoyed another day of quiet county roads lined with fields of corn and soybeans. I didn't take many pictures of the fields today since they would look the same as yesterday! I did capture this picture of the huge irrigation sprinkler watering this morning.
Rhonda and Jon were moving a little quicker than I was so we planned to meet in Rochester for second breakfast. I've been seeing these bushes and flowers the last couple days and decided to get a picture. I talked to a retired farmer about the flowers - they are Roses of Sharon. She grew up on the farm, then her husband and her farmed it, and now their son-in-law is farming the land. Very nice lady!
I took a quick break for a snack at a cute country church and cemetary. As I was pulling out my snack, a small wagon with 4 Amish kids came flying around the corner. The older girl was driving - she looked about 11 or 12 - with 3 younger kids. We knew we were in Amish farm country because you could see the "evidence" of the horse-drawn carriages all over the road. There were times we had to do some dodging to avoid the mess! The older 2 girls waved as they went by and then all of their heads turned around to look again once they were past me.
Rhonda and Jon found a place to eat on the way into Rochester and I met them there a few minutes later. As we were walking out after eating second breakfast, a gentlemen got up from his table and asked where we were going and then wanted to know our names and shake our hands. Turned out he was the mayor of Rochester, IN. It must have been the fine dining establishment of the town.
Leaving Rochester we got on the Nickle Plate Trail for about 15 miles to Denver, IN. It was another great trail with lots of shade. As per our routine, we started out together and each settled into their own pace. I caught up with Rhonda and Jon in Denver taking a break at the side of the trail.
As I was riding down the trail I passed by this grain truck being loaded from the silo.
More scenery from today. Selfie on the trail, clear creek I crossed over on the way to Wabash, and a couple cool barns I saw.
From Denver we only had another 16 miles to Wabash, IN and our hotel for the night. We didn't have any good camping options for tonight. One option was going to be a 70+ mile day to wind up at a primitive camping site, or a really short day. We opted for 60 miles and a hotel.
Tomorrow night we will be in Monroeville, IN near the Ohio border. There is a cyclist-only indoor lodging option at the city park, complete with showers and laundry facilities. And it is free! It will be a long 70-mile day tomorrow but again there were no other good camping options.
