We were a little slow getting up and out of camp this morning. I finally got up and started packing up the tent about 7am. At least I wasn't the last one up - Rhonda was still sleeping! She got up shortly after me. It was 9am before we rolled out of camp after a small breakfast of oatmeal to get us down the road.
It was cool enough last night to be snuggled in my sleeping bag, and was about 55 degrees when I got up. It warmed up fast after the sun came up but was still a pleasant 80 degrees this afternoon. We were on quieter backroads out of Niagara Falls to Lockport, NY. We turned onto Upper Mountain Road and I was fearing the worst. Any route called scenic, or roads with hill or mountain in the name usually mean you are going to do a lot of climbing. Fortunately, there were only small, rolling hills on this road! There was a great view of the valley below from here.
There were pretty fields and some interesting houses and barns along the way.
We went in search of second breakfast in Lockport. We wound up at a coffee place across the street from where we could jump on the Erie Canalway Trail. I had the most amazing blueberry cinnamon roll there! That was enough to power me down the trail for quite a while. We jumped on the Erie Canalway Trail at Lock 35 on the Erie Canal. It is a dirt/crushed gravel path that runs along the bank of the Erie Canal east/west from Buffalo to Albany. We will be on the canalway for another day and a half past Rochester, NY before heading further north. Pictures of Lock 35 and the Erie Canal from today.
We crossed over the Erie Canal and took a quick snack break in Medina. We decided to wait for a full meal until we were in Albion since it was a shorter day. As we left Medina, we crossed over the Oak Orchard River and Medina Falls. The Erie Canal is built in an aqueduct over the river and so the flowing river goes underneath the canal. Pretty cool sight!
We were about 7 miles from Albion when we ran into Zach and Jack riding westbound. They started in Maine and are going to San Diego. They are using a variety of Adventure Cycling Association routes and expect the trip to be about 5,000 miles, arriving sometime in October. Zach has a Go-Pro mounted on the front of his bike and is also carrying a drone to video the trip. Someday you may run across their trip on YouTube.
